The Pro’s And Cons of Solar!

If you’re starting to think about going solar, that’s great! As one of the nation's leading renewable energy specialists, we're excited to help you explore this option. Let's dive into the pros and cons of going solar so that you can make an informed decision.

Pros:

  1. Reduced Energy Bills: One of the most significant benefits of going solar is the potential to reduce your energy bills. By generating your own electricity, you can significantly lower or even eliminate your monthly electricity bills.

  2. Environmentally Friendly: Solar energy is a clean and renewable source of energy that does not release harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. By going solar, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and help protect the environment.

  3. Increased Home Value: Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular, and homes with solar panels are often seen as more desirable and valuable in the real estate market. By going solar, you can increase the value of your home and potentially attract more buyers if you decide to sell in the future.

  4. Tax Credits and Incentives: There are several tax credits and incentives available to homeowners who go solar, which can help offset the upfront costs of installing a solar system. These incentives vary by state and federal government programs.

Cons:

  1. Upfront Costs: The initial cost of installing a solar system can be expensive, although the cost has come down significantly in recent years. However, the long-term savings on your energy bills can often offset these costs over time. ***(Tycho Energy’s Redirection Program allows you to enjoy the benefits of solar energy with $0 upfront cost! Click Here to learn more!)***

  2. Weather Dependent: Solar panels generate electricity from the sun's energy, so their output can be affected by weather conditions such as cloud cover or rain. However, solar panels are still an effective source of energy even in less sunny areas. ***(Luckily here in Arizona, we’ve got bright sunshine beating down on our homes almost every day of the year! 1:1 Net Metering allows you to use your electricity credits to consume any additional energy your home needs from the grid at no additional cost!)***

  3. Maintenance: Solar panels require regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure that they operate at peak efficiency. However, this maintenance is relatively minor and can be easily managed with routine care. ***(When you go solar with Tycho, we’re on the hook for the life of your system, any maintenance or necessary cleaning is on us!)***

At Tycho Energy, we believe that the pros of going solar far outweigh the cons. Our goal is to help you understand the benefits of solar energy and design a system that meets your needs and budget. If you're ready to take the next step, we're here to help!

“How Tycho Energy Is Helping AZ Homeowners Save Money On Electricity Despite Rising Energy Rates” - US Insider

“An AZ-based solar company, Tycho Energy is giving homeowners a second option for their power that comes with some enticing benefits. The company has developed a program (The Tycho Redirection Program) that allows homeowners to redirect a portion of their monthly power bill towards converting their home to solar energy. Homeowners who qualify for the program aren’t required to pay any money upfront for the solar system’s installation and enjoy a fixed monthly rate for their electricity and an average 15-50% reduction in total monthly energy cost. Miraculously, homeowners see these savings all while maintaining their current level of consumption.”

“Due to the rising cost of electricity, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce their monthly bills and take advantage of renewable energy. An AZ-based solar company, Tycho Energy is giving homeowners a second option for their power that comes with some enticing benefits. Miraculously, homeowners see these savings all while maintaining their current level of consumption.

Since the advent of electrical services to American homes in the 1890’s, the only way for residents to save money on their electric bill has been to decrease energy consumption. Most of a home’s energy is consumed by appliances. Lighting accounts for 9-12% of a home’s monthly power consumption, Water heaters, 12%, Refrigerators 8%. Dishwashers, Ovens and Televisions consume an additional 12%. The largest electricity consumer in a household is the air conditioning unit which accounts for 45-50% of the home’s total consumption. In most cases, reducing power consumption means reducing the use of the home’s largest power consumer. In Arizona, daytime temperatures climb to an average of 107 degrees in the summer. Due to consistently increasing utility rates, cooling a home to a comfortable 70 degrees has become almost unaffordable.

When a homeowner buys their power from a utility company, they pay per kWh, plus surcharges, delivery charges, power supply charges, taxes and assessment charges. When you use more power, you pay more money. Each month, as someone pays their bill, that money disappears into the hands of the utility provider. Through Tycho Energy’s Redirection program, homeowners pay a monthly payment for the system which produces the power. Since power is being produced on site, there are no supply or delivery charges. Due to the Federal Solar investment tax credit, homeowners who qualify for the program can claim up to 30% of the system’s total cost as a tax credit. Instead of throwing money away to pay for power each month, a homeowner’s monthly cost of electricity goes towards an asset that increases the value of the home.

How does the program work? Homeowners can apply for the program by contacting Tycho Energy by phone at (602) 466-9766 or online at https://tychoenergy.com. First, the company needs to know how much power a home is using each month. They gather this information by taking a look at a copy of a recent electric bill. This gives them an idea of how many panels a home will need to produce 100% of its power. Next, one of Tycho Energy’s engineers will use satellite imagery to take measurements and create a virtual design of the system to confirm that the home’s roof has enough surface area for the necessary amount of solar panels. If it does, they schedule a preliminary site survey of the home to check for sun exposure and structural integrity. If the home is in adequate shape to support the system, Tycho then submits a request to the utility provider in the area. If the utility provider approves the request, the home is officially eligible for the program.”

“How Michael Thooft Has Built A 7 Figure Business In The Renewable Energy Sector” - CEO Weekly

As of 2022, the company’s efforts thus far have successfully offset 3175.2 metric tons of carbon emissions effectively doing the work of 14.8 million trees.

Phoenix AZ, March 10, 2023

“Born in Rhode Island and raised in Arizona, Michael Thooft is the CEO and Co-founder of Tycho Energy, a leading renewable energy solutions company. Early in life, Michael wanted to become a doctor and that’s what he set out to do. He attended ASU full-time and needed to pay the bills while he studied, so he made his start in the service industry. Thooft quickly rose to a leadership position due to his high level of professionalism and passion for providing best-in-class customer service. While working as a bartender & eventually restaurant manager, he met his best friend, now business partner Erik Lindgren. The two immediately connected and found that they worked well together. That professional relationship seeded a strong friendship that blossomed into the business partnership that’s helped thousands of AZ homeowners save money on their electric bills since 2017.

While in school, Michael developed a passion for sales and helping others. That passion grew to the point that he decided to change his major. He continued his education and eventually graduated with a business degree & magna cum laude. Degree in hand, Michael continued his work at the top of the ladder as Head Of Bartending for a major corporation here in the US. “I loved what I did, and I made good money but at the same time, I knew I wanted to do more for the world, for my family, and for myself.” In 2016 Michael started exploring renewable energy and absolutely loved the technology.

“As I started to look into it more and learn about the products and their delivery, I realized that renewable energy didn’t just benefit the environment, but it really benefited people financially. We don’t rent our cars, it’d be way too expensive to do that year-round. As people mature, they stop renting an apartment and buy a house because it’s not nearly as expensive by the square foot and you’re gaining an appreciating asset. I realized that residential renewable energy systems were just the same, but since the technology is new, people just haven’t been able to see the benefit. Most homeowners rent their power from a utility company where they pay for power by the kWh, pay delivery fees, production fees and dozens of other surcharges. After you’ve converted your home to renewable energy, you’re producing the power on-site. You don’t pay for your power by the kWh, you pay for the system. Your bill doesn’t skyrocket in the summer, it stays the same. The way we do things now, our average homeowner saves between 15-50% on their total monthly cost of electricity.”

Business degree in hand, in 2017, Thooft set out on a new journey by starting Tycho Energy with his co-worker, best friend and business partner, Erik Lindgren. Early on, the duo decided that they’d take what they’d learned in the service industry and apply it to the business. That meant building the right offer. Through creative financing and installation partnerships, the two developed a program that homeowners could apply for that would allow homeowners to convert their home’s power source from conventional to renewable energy without having to come out of pocket thousands of dollars up front. “We didn’t just want to sell a product, we wanted to help people.” says Thooft. To share this offer with the world and earn new business, the two went straight to the market themselves by knocking on doors. Luckily, the two had built up quite an inclination for talking with strangers and quickly met their first customers. In the first year, Tycho Energy achieved 2.3 million in sales, earning them the funds to invest in and grow the business as well as concrete proof that the business model would work on a larger scale.

Where many would buy a fancy new car or blow the money on a few good times, Thooft and Lindgren unanimously decided to invest the money back into the business. By 2020, they were able to bring on 10 full-time employees which allowed them to drastically increase their sales. Thooft and his partner used the rest of the money to acquire an improved office space and start seeking mentorship from leaders in the renewable energy sector. “I learned quickly that running a business was completely different from working at one; there’s just a lot more to it. Your business will be entirely void of structure and systems until you develop them. We had two choices, spend the next 20 years learning by experience, or pay someone else to teach us what they’d learned with their own lifetime of experience.

In 2022, Thooft met sales mentor Taylor McCarthy, co-founder of Knockstar University. Knockstar’s sales training platforms helped Tycho streamline the process of training new company representatives. That training also helped those representatives grow from salesmen to Renewable Energy Sales Professionals. Being an experienced leader, Thooft knew that the only way to grow as a company is to lead from the front. Thooft entered Knockstar’s immersive training program “The 6 Week Bootcamp” where he studied training materials night & day and entered a national sales competition among the best of the best in his industry. Due to Thooft’s dedication to his craft he graduated top of his class and placed first in the competition.

As of 2022, the company’s efforts thus far have successfully offset 3175.2 metric tons of carbon emissions effectively doing the work of 14.8 million trees. Last November, Thooft shared a stage with his mentors Taylor McCarthy and Tom Hopkins among other leaders in the renewable energy sector as a keynote speaker. Since 2020, Tycho Energy has grown from a bootstrapped team of 2 to a thriving team of 30. This year, the company is on pace to achieve 75 million in sales. Aside from their work’s environmental impact, Thooft and his team have become involved in dozens of charities and raised thousands of dollars for causes that handle problems ranging from world hunger to medical research. Throughout his time in business, Thooft’s company has maintained an unblemished record with the Better Business Bureau and earned a perfect 5-star rating on Google.”

“Erik Lindgren – From Service Industry Specialist To 7 Figure Business Owner” - CEO Weekly

“As of 2022, Tycho has handled over 3,000 renewable energy conversion projects in the US and is currently averaging 70 each month. Their efforts have had a major positive environmental impact offsetting the over 3,100 metric tons of carbon, effectively doing the work of 14.8 million trees.”

Phoenix AZ, February 06, 2023

“Erik Lindgren, the Chief Operating Officer and Co-founder of Tycho Energy originally set out to build a career as a professional golfer with the Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA). From a young age, Lindgren took to golfing as a hobby that became his passion. That passion eventually earned him a scholarship to attend Robert Morris University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. After graduating college at age 25, Erik moved west to Arizona in the pursuit of furthering his golfing career. As time went on, he decided that he wanted to try something new. He set sports to the side and took on 3 jobs to fill that void. Primarily, he worked in the bar service space where he quickly rose to leadership. Though his move to AZ didn’t net a PGA contract, it did set off a chain of events that lead to the man he is today. While working as a bartender in a major US corporation, Erik met Michael Thooft, now his partner and the second co-founder of Tycho Energy. “Mike and I worked really great together, we both shared a passion for helping people.”

“I liked what I did at the time and I made good money doing it, but at the end of the day, I wanted to have a bigger impact on the world.” Says Lindgren. In 2016 Erik set out on a new endeavor in the renewable energy sector. Seven days a week he sold residential solar systems by going door-to-door in AZ neighborhoods. Three months in, he decided to extend an invitation to his co-worker. Together the two sold dozens of systems as employees and in early 2017 they decided to take what they’d learned in the service industry and build a new kind of renewable energy solutions company centered around helping American homeowners save money on electricity while positively impacting the environment.

“Firist, we needed to make renewable energy accessible to as many people as possible. Conventionally, powering your home with renewable energy meant a huge upfront expense, so we started reaching out to different lenders to see if we could find a lender that made sense.” Through creative lending and installation partners, Erik and his partner developed a program that allowed qualifying AZ homeowners to convert their home to renewable energy with no upfront expense and a monthly payment that averaged below most homeowner’s existing monthly cost for electricity. Over time the program evolved and improved. That program is now known as the ‘Tycho Energy Redirection Program’.

Erik & his partner Michael hit the streets and quickly earned their clients. The customer service experience they’d gained in the service industry translated to a streamlined and painless process for their customers which earned them positive ratings that lead to more business. In its first year, Tycho Energy achieved 2.3 million In sales. Where many young people would spend faster than they earned, the duo decided to reinvest their profits back into the business. With their earnings, Erik & Michael were able to grow the Tycho team by bringing on 6 full time employees. Year 2, the company nearly doubled their sales. With the company’s early success, Erik decided to seek out education from other industry leaders. “One of my biggest struggles early on was learning how to balance leading a team and driving revenue at the same time. In 2021, we found 2 mentors, Taylor McCarthy.” Tycho hired Knockstar University to help streamline the training and onboarding of new team members which helped Erik balance in entrepreneurship. Leading from the front, Erik entered the company’s intense training program where he studied, trained and entered into a 6 week sales competition among the best of the best in the renewable energy space and graduated top of his class. Today, both Erik and Michael attribute much of the company’s success to the mentorship they’ve received from Knockstar University.

Erik’s experience in the training inspired him to build the same processes within Tycho Energy. He became dedicated to learning as much information on renewable energy technology as possible and sharing it with his team. “We don’t just want employees at Tycho, we want to help people build a career. As a leader, it’s my job to provide an affirming environment where individuals can find success. If they fail, that’s my fault. I learn more and more every day and I share everything with the team.” Throughout his time in business, Erik’s company has maintained a spotless record with the Better Business Bureau and earned a perfect 5 star rating on Google.

As of 2022, Tycho has handled over 3,000 renewable energy conversion projects in the US and is currently averaging 70 each month. Their efforts have had a major positive environmental impact offsetting the over 3,100 metric tons of carbon, effectively doing the work of 14.8 million trees. Aside from what they’ve done for the environment, Tycho is making strides to improve the lives of people they’ll never meet through volunteering and charitable donations. The company has donated thousands of dollars to charitable organizations that handle world hunger, medical research, mental health awareness, and more. Last November, Erik and the Tycho team grew out their mustaches and raised funds for Movember, a charitable foundation dedicated to mental health and cancer research. This year, Erik has his sights set on expansion into new markets. “At the end of the day, I want to positively impact the lives of as many people as possible. Whether through renewable energy, a new career, or charity. That’s what gets me out of bed every morning.””

“AZ Solar Company Tycho Energy Takes On Movember” - Good Men Project

“Once a month we go out as a team and give back to the community. Movember is a great charity and the leading foundation that’s tackling these men’s health issues. For the month of November, we decided to do our part in helping them continue that work.” - Erik Lindgren - Co-founder - Tycho Energy

March 03, 2023

“In 2017, co-founders Michael Thooft & Erik Lindgren started their company Tycho Energy with a shared passion for clean energy and helping others. Since they opened their doors the company has helped hundreds of Arizona families save money on their electricity by switching to solar. So far, the solar systems that Tycho Energy has installed generate over 4.2 million kWh of energy annually. This means that their work offsets 1,587.6 metric tons of carbon emissions each year effectively doing the work of 7.4 million trees. But what really stands out is what they do off the clock. Every month, the Tycho team goes out and gives back to the community through donations and volunteer work. For the month of November, the company decided to grow out their mustaches in an effort to raise awareness and funds to support Movember.

What Is Movember? Movember is a global charitable foundation dedicated to raising awareness and funding research of of men’s health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide prevention. The organization funds dozens of cancer and men’s health research projects across the globe. To name a few, Movember has donated $6.15-million to the Prostate Cancer Research Alliance, $1.2-million to the GAP5 Testicular Cancer Translational Research Project, $10.4–million to the Veterans and First Responders project. To date, Movember has raised $837-million in donations and funded over 1,250 men’s health projects since 2003.

Why Movember? Well, we reached out and asked them that very question. Co-founder Erik Lindgren had this to say, “Each year, there are about 800,000 suicides, and 69% of those are male suicides, roughly 552,000 men every year. There are between 8,000 – 10,000 new testicular cancer patients every year. Just this year there have been 268,490 new prostate cancer patients resulting in 34,500 deaths this just this year.. My dad is one of those men, he’s been battling prostate cancer for 6 years now. Once a month we go out as a team and give back to the community. Movember is a great charity and the leading foundation that’s tackling these men’s health issues. For the month of November, we decided to do our part in helping them continue that work.

Click here to watch the full interview with Erik’s dad on Instagram!

How did they do it? For the entire month of November, Erik, Mike and several members of the Tycho Energy team grew out their mustaches that sparked conversations about men’s health issues. The company personally donated $100 for every solar system they installed. The company also launched a co-branded Movember/Tycho Energy t-shirt line and donated 100% of the proceeds to the foundation. Through social media posts, the team created and shared content that educated viewers about men’s health issues including a full interview with Erik’s father. As a final push to raise as much as possible, the company organized and hosted a cornhole tournament and donated all entry fee proceeds to Movember. Shirt by shirt, sale by sale and post by post the team accumulated over $7,000 and donated it all to Movember.

During our interview with Tycho Energy, co-founder Michael Thooft shed more light on the company’s goals and values, “When we started this company, we set out to improve our lives and the lives of others. We want to positively impact as many people as possible. We started with our product. Solar power is a good thing for the planet. When you size, price, and install these systems correctly, it helps homeowners save money on electricity every month, so that’s where we started” The company helps homeowners take advantage of the Federal Solar Tax Credit to convert their home’s power source to rooftop solar systems through their “Redirection Program”. Homeowners who qualify for the program pay $0 out of pocket for installation and enjoy an average 30% reduction in their total monthly energy costs. “We also wanted to build a platform that allowed our team to grow both in their career and as individuals . The way we see it, a job shouldn’t just be a way to make money, it should be a place where you grow, learn and are supported by people around you. We set and uphold high professional standards as a company. In the office, we train the team on the technology behind the systems we install and how to provide best-in-class customer service. Off the clock, we teach our team what we’ve learned throughout our lives and our careers. We share what we’ve learned about finding work-life balance, saving and investing. One of the most powerful things we preach is the importance of giving back and paying it forward. I’m happy to say that our team shares that mentality.”

The company’s goal to positively impact as many lives as possible is ongoing.
