“AZ Solar Company Tycho Energy Takes On Movember” - Good Men Project

March 03, 2023

“In 2017, co-founders Michael Thooft & Erik Lindgren started their company Tycho Energy with a shared passion for clean energy and helping others. Since they opened their doors the company has helped hundreds of Arizona families save money on their electricity by switching to solar. So far, the solar systems that Tycho Energy has installed generate over 4.2 million kWh of energy annually. This means that their work offsets 1,587.6 metric tons of carbon emissions each year effectively doing the work of 7.4 million trees. But what really stands out is what they do off the clock. Every month, the Tycho team goes out and gives back to the community through donations and volunteer work. For the month of November, the company decided to grow out their mustaches in an effort to raise awareness and funds to support Movember.

What Is Movember? Movember is a global charitable foundation dedicated to raising awareness and funding research of of men’s health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide prevention. The organization funds dozens of cancer and men’s health research projects across the globe. To name a few, Movember has donated $6.15-million to the Prostate Cancer Research Alliance, $1.2-million to the GAP5 Testicular Cancer Translational Research Project, $10.4–million to the Veterans and First Responders project. To date, Movember has raised $837-million in donations and funded over 1,250 men’s health projects since 2003.

Why Movember? Well, we reached out and asked them that very question. Co-founder Erik Lindgren had this to say, “Each year, there are about 800,000 suicides, and 69% of those are male suicides, roughly 552,000 men every year. There are between 8,000 – 10,000 new testicular cancer patients every year. Just this year there have been 268,490 new prostate cancer patients resulting in 34,500 deaths this just this year.. My dad is one of those men, he’s been battling prostate cancer for 6 years now. Once a month we go out as a team and give back to the community. Movember is a great charity and the leading foundation that’s tackling these men’s health issues. For the month of November, we decided to do our part in helping them continue that work.

How did they do it? For the entire month of November, Erik, Mike and several members of the Tycho Energy team grew out their mustaches that sparked conversations about men’s health issues. The company personally donated $100 for every solar system they installed. The company also launched a co-branded Movember/Tycho Energy t-shirt line and donated 100% of the proceeds to the foundation. Through social media posts, the team created and shared content that educated viewers about men’s health issues including a full interview with Erik’s father. As a final push to raise as much as possible, the company organized and hosted a cornhole tournament and donated all entry fee proceeds to Movember. Shirt by shirt, sale by sale and post by post the team accumulated over $7,000 and donated it all to Movember.

During our interview with Tycho Energy, co-founder Michael Thooft shed more light on the company’s goals and values, “When we started this company, we set out to improve our lives and the lives of others. We want to positively impact as many people as possible. We started with our product. Solar power is a good thing for the planet. When you size, price, and install these systems correctly, it helps homeowners save money on electricity every month, so that’s where we started” The company helps homeowners take advantage of the Federal Solar Tax Credit to convert their home’s power source to rooftop solar systems through their “Redirection Program”. Homeowners who qualify for the program pay $0 out of pocket for installation and enjoy an average 30% reduction in their total monthly energy costs. “We also wanted to build a platform that allowed our team to grow both in their career and as individuals . The way we see it, a job shouldn’t just be a way to make money, it should be a place where you grow, learn and are supported by people around you. We set and uphold high professional standards as a company. In the office, we train the team on the technology behind the systems we install and how to provide best-in-class customer service. Off the clock, we teach our team what we’ve learned throughout our lives and our careers. We share what we’ve learned about finding work-life balance, saving and investing. One of the most powerful things we preach is the importance of giving back and paying it forward. I’m happy to say that our team shares that mentality.”

The company’s goal to positively impact as many lives as possible is ongoing.
